Canadian Express Entry – Indians to the fore

Canadian Express Entry

The current unwelcoming attitude of the United States towards migrants is quite evident. An increasing number of people are now headed towards Canada instead. Indians are no different. In recent years, there have been various challenges for NRIs in the U.S.

Cases of extension of H-1B visa either being delayed or denied, and Green Card backlogs are to be noted. Spouses of H1-B holders might be denied the right to work altogether.

All the above, in combination, make Canada appear more approachable. In 2018, Canada accepted beyond 92,000 entrants under their Express Entry scheme. Out of this, more than 39,500 were from India alone.

As per the Times of India, the number of Indians gaining Permanent Residency via the Express Entry has increased 51% when compared to the statistics of 2017.

The Global Talent Stream holds much promise for Indians. As per the Global Talent Stream, companies in Canada can hire expats that have a STEM background. The processing time as per the GTS is about two weeks.

Launched as a pilot scheme, the GTS was later converted to a permanent scheme.

Canada aims at admitting more than one million people, as permanent residents, in a three-year period, from 2019 to 2021.

In 2019, Canada seeks to welcome 330,800. Another 341,000 are to be granted Canada Permanent Residency in 2020. For the year 2021, the target is set at 350,000.

All the eligible applicants for Express Entry are placed into a pool draw for Express Entry. Once a part of the pool, they are then assessed on the basis of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS gives points to each profile based on certain criteria. Factors that include age, experience, education, and skill in English are considered.

The CRS has the maximum as 1200. The cut-off keeps changing. Basis of the latest draw held on June 21, 2019, the current cut-off stands at 462 CRS points.
