Canada Jobs

The largest gain of Canada Jobs was witnessed in April 2019 and it was the largest gain in one month for net jobs on record. 107,000 Canada Jobs were added in the month. The provinces to record noteworthy gains include Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

The unpredicted leap in Canada Jobs far exceeded the forecast of the addition of 10,000 new jobs. It helped to push the unemployment rate in Canada to 5.7%, as quoted by the CIC News.

73,000 jobs were full-time of the total new Canada Jobs in April. The majority of the gains were in the private sector with 84,000. On a year-on-year basis, employment increased by 426,000 and 248,000 out of it was full-time.

It was reported by Statistics Canada that employment increased for:

  • Youth in the age range of 15 to 24 years
  • Individuals aged 55 years and above
  • Women in the core working age of 25 to 54 years

Toronto Dominion Bank Senior Economist Brian DePratto said that it was, by and large, a solid report for April. It is a firm message that employers still possess faith in the economy of Canada, he added.  Almost all indicators of quality were strong this month with:

  • The largest gain in jobs with solid growth of full-time jobs
  • All in employees instead of self-employed
  • Increased number of Canadians pooled into the labour market
  • Wages going higher

The increase in employment reflects the fact that the economy of Canada is drawing fresh workers. This includes immigrants and those below 24 years and the unemployment continues to decrease

The highest gain in provinces was witnessed by Ontario with an increase of 47,000 jobs in April. This was chiefly because of the addition of part-time work for people in the age of 15 to 24 years, said Statistics Canada.

Quebec province added 38,000 jobs and its rate of unemployment reached 4.9% decreasing by 0.3 % points. This is the lowest rate after 1976 since Statistics Canada started compiling comparable data. Alberta province also added 21,000 jobs in the month of April.

The only province to record a decrease in employment in April was New Brunswick. Remaining provinces in Canada witnessed modest changes. Increase in Canada Jobs was spread across diverse industries like:

  • Agriculture: +7,000
  • Public administration: +9,000
  • Information, Culture and Recreation: +14,000
  • Construction: +29,000
  • Wholesale and Retail Trade: +32,000
