With a hope to improve the constantly dropping number Indian students studying in Britain, the country’s government has planned to give a visa with special provisions to all the students willing to come to UK to study from the Commonwealth countries of the world. The drastic drop in the number of Indian students studying in UK has compelled the government to take this decision.
The drastic drop in numbers
The official reports reveal a huge drop in the number of students from India. Presently the number is at 19,750 in 2013-2014 which earlier used to be 39,090 students in the year 2010-2011. It is widely experienced that this drop is because of the lack of post study work permit in Britain. This is the direct effect of changes in the permission to work in the United Kingdom.
Situation then and now
Earlier students from India and other Commonwealth countries could apply for jobs within two years of completing their course in a university. Now the time they are given, to find a job is not more than four months. In addition to this, there is another condition that needs to be kept in mind by students.
What the officials have to say…
The condition requires applicants to find a job that pays them not less than 20,800 pounds. The Indian High Commissioner to UK, Mr Ranjan Mathai, opines that the Universities of the country should involve themselves in this process. He said "We strongly feel that the universities should be part of this process of ensuring that students are able to come if they meet the requirements, and they should be part of the dialogue."
He added that students should have access to education without any restrictions at any part of the world. According to him, it is a two way process since a lot of students also go to India to study. While UK Home Secretary Theresa May is trying hard to reduce the number of immigrants, her cabinet colleagues are pleading for the students to be left out of this.
