Cybercrime is a rapidly increasing issue in Australia. Nevertheless, many Australians are ignorant of this issue and its results. In 2017, millions of Australians experienced cybercrime. As a result, $50 million was lost to online-based scams. About 40 percent of cybercrime was approached through email or social media platforms. These scams accounted for 44 percent of losses, as quoted by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

The root of this threat lies in the increasing use of the internet in everyday lives. Australians are relying tremendously on online websites for communication, education, shopping and socializing. Hence it is of utmost importance that they use the internet in a secure manner.

Introduction of the Stay Smart Online program aims at improving this phenomenon. The program educates Australians on how to be secure and confident in the digital age. It was established back in 2006. The program now involves a community of over 80000 people and organizations. They help others by sharing relevant and timely information.

Home internet users and small businesses have benefited a lot from this initiative. It has helped people in reducing the risk of cyber security threats. People are now well aware of software vulnerabilities, online scams and risky online behaviors.

This year the Stay Smart Online Week has taken place from 8th October to 14th October. The theme was ‘Reverse the Threat’. Australians were educated to follow four simple steps.

  • Install the latest updates for applications on your device
  • Create strong passwords and use two-factor authentication
  • Be aware of phishing scams
  • Be careful when on public Wi-Fi

The program focuses on spreading the knowledge that these four steps can reverse the threat of cybercrime. They insist that one should take care of their devices and online assets. It is as important as safeguarding one’s physical belongings. However, it is no more complicated than the steps they take in other aspects of their life. By taking the same care of their devices, they can protect their online assets as well. This awareness will, in turn, reduce the threat of phishing scams.
