The process of becoming a US Citizen begins with obtaining a Green Card says Pamela Wilson the USCIS Public Information Officer. The Green Card authorizes its holder to live and work lawfully in the US. They can travel with authorization and apply for Citizenship after 5 years. If they are married to a US Citizen, they can apply after 3 years, explains Wilson.
After having resided in the US permanently for 3 to 5 years, individuals can sill the N-400 Application Form. It is the form for naturalizations and costs $ 725. This is inclusive of $ 85 for verifying the background and $ 640 for the application.
Subsequently, they must make an appointment for their picture and fingerprints to be taken. They are also required to succeed in the background verification, as quoted by the Live 5 News. A USCIS Officer will conduct a one-on-one interview with the applicants.
Applicants are required to take an English and oral Civics exam in the same interview. They must give correct answers to 10 questions and have the ability to converse proficiently in English. YouTube has a practice session with 100 Q & A to help in the preparation.
Below is one such sample question and answer:
Q: The first 3 words of the US Constitution convey the idea of self-government, what are they?
A: ‘We the people’
The USCIS Officer approves the application if the applicants successfully pass the oral test and fulfil all other requirements. The Oath of Allegiance is the final step in the process of becoming a US Citizen.
USCIS plans to have all forms online by the year 2020. This will make the office paperless and the process will become more convenient as well as faster.
