In a very big and surprising development, US President Donald Trump has vowed H-1B Visa reform that will offer US Citizenship pathway to 78% of Indians in the US with this visa. Trump said that he intends to encourage highly skilled and talented people to go ahead with a career path in the US. They will also be offered a potential pathway to US Citizenship he added.

Below is the tweet Trump shared this Friday morning:

“H-1B Visa holders in the US can be assured that soon the program will be changed. This will offer them both certainty and simplicity for residing in the US. It also includes a potential pathway to US Citizenship. We intend to support highly skilled and talented individuals to go ahead with their options for a career in the US”.

Indians constituted 78% of the 395, 025 overseas nationals waiting for US Green cards with 306, 061 as of April 2018. This is in mere 1 stream of LPR applications based on employment. Majority of them are professionals in the IT sector, as quoted by the Times of India.

The huge backlog of Indian applicants for LPR is due to the nation wise quota. It offers just 7% of the Green Cards to each nationality annually. The surprising outreach by Trump towards overseas guest workers has come amidst heated debate over reforms for immigration. This includes the H-1B Visa reform.

A great deal of support from Indians in the US for Trump is based on his vow to reform the immigration system. This is discriminatory against those arriving at the US lawfully according to many experts. It is because of the favouring of unlawful immigrants who are benefitted by diverse regularization sand amnesty programs.
