Many foreign educational institutions and varsities have been offering Ph.D. programs in distance mode in association with EdTech companies. The UGC (University Grants Commission) and AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) announced that these online Ph.D. programs are not recognized on October 28, 2022. This becomes the second warning by the regulators or Higher education and the technical education people in 2022 to the students who are enrolling in these courses. To maintain the standards and the reputation for awarding Ph.D. degrees, UGC has set a regulation called ‘UGC Regulation 2016’. All higher educational institutions and colleges must mandatorily follow the UGC regulations to give Ph.D. degrees as per UGC and AICTE. The government has already warned EdTech companies about their unfair trade practices. And is also working on a policy to stop these practices. The public and the students are advised to be aware of this rule for foreign institutions.
Aspiring students need to check the authenticity of the Ph.D. programs if they are according to the UGC regulation, 2016 before taking admission. Instead, the students can go to foreign universities by immigrating to countries with study visas.
