There has been a 51% increase in 2018 in the number of Indians getting Canada PR as compared to 2017. There is more interest now in the Indian diaspora (including those living in the US) to obtain Canadian PR.

In 2018, 39,500 Indians obtained Permanent Residence of Canada through the Express Entry Program. This constitutes 43% of the total number of candidates who were granted PR in 2018.

Recently released data reveal that Canada admitted 92,000 new Permanent Residents in 2018. In comparison to 2017, this was a 41% increase. In 2017, Canada had admitted 65,500 Permanent Residents out of which 26,300or 40% were Indians. 2018 saw this number further increase to 51%.

This puts India at the top position of the most number of people obtaining Permanent Residence in 2018.

Canada admitted only 5,800 Chinese Permanent Residents in 2018 which put China in the 3rd spot. China had previously occupied the 2nd spot in 2017. The second spot in 2018 was occupied by Nigeria.

MOST CITIZENS ADMITTED
Country 2018 2017 Rise%
India 39,677 26,331 51%
Nigeria 6,653 2,878 131%
China 5,885 5,737 3%
Total 92,231 65,423 41%

The US is slowly losing its popularity due to its stringent immigration reforms. H1B Visa denials, Green Card backlogs, and a proposal to deny work rights to H4 Visa holders are causing more Indians to now opt for Canada.

Those who are based in India too are increasingly looking to migrate to Canada and work and settle permanently.

Canada had recently converted the Global Talent Scheme from a pilot to a permanent scheme. The GTS allows employers in Canada to sponsor foreign workers from STEM background in just 2 weeks. This is expected to further increase the number of Indians migrating to Canada, as per The Times of India.

Canada uses the Express Entry Program to manage applications for its economic migration programs. The EE program follows a points-based system where the highest ranking candidates receive invitations in regular draws.

The top countries for the number of citizens admitted generally mirrors the countries with the most number of invitations.

In 2018, Canada issued 41,675 invitations or 46% to Indians. In 2017, 36,308 or 42% of the invitations were issued to Indians. The number is expected to further increase in 2019. This is because Canada has increased its immigration target for 2019 and 2020 under its multi-year immigration level plans.
