New Brunswick New Brunswick has announced a 5-year Population Growth Strategy to address the present and future workforce needs. The new strategy focuses on attracting and retaining 7,500 new immigrants per year by 2024. New Brunswick plans to increase the immigration intake to 1% of the province’s population. This will triple the number of migrants currently living in the province. The number of new immigrants to New Brunswick has increased from 625 in 2014 to 2,291 in 2017. The province plans to continue this growth streak. The new Population Growth Strategy plans to attract more skilled foreign workers to the province. It also aims to bring in entrepreneurs to align with the labour needs of the Atlantic province. The idea is to create an environment which will help new immigrants and their families settle and succeed. The new strategy will also focus on retaining new immigrants in the province. The strategy targets to reach 85% 1-year retention rate by 2024. New Brunswick to target French-speaking immigrants After Quebec and Ontario, New Brunswick is the third most French dominant province in Canada. 34% of New Brunswick’s population is bilingual in French and English.19% of all the new immigrants in 2018 were French-speaking. The new strategy will aim for a 2% yearly increase in the number of French-speaking newcomers to reach 33% by 2024. New Brunswick forecasts more jobs in the next 8 years New Brunswick estimates to have 120,000 more jobs by 2027. 13,000 of these jobs will need to be filled by workers from outside the province, as per CIC News. Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program The new 5-year strategy plans to increase immigration through other pathways also like the New Brunswick PNP and the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program addresses labour market issues in the 4 Atlantic provinces: -New Brunswick -Prince Edward Island -Newfoundland and Labrador -Nova Scotia To apply under the AIP program, applicants need to have an offer of employment from a designated employer in the provinces. Applicants need to have a minimum one year of relevant experience. They also need to have education, language skills and funds as per the AIP program requirements. Canada has extended the AIP program for another 2 years. The program aims to welcome 4,000 new migrants by 2020.
