Australia has now opened its door to low-skilled Overseas Immigrants. The aim is to ease the labor shortage in various regions of the country. The following rules apply to the initiative.
Australia is ready to reduce its mandatory criteria for skills, salary and language for Overseas Immigrants. However, they must stay in the region for a minimum of 3 years. The Immigration Department aims at filling the employment gaps through this program. The candidates will be provided with an easy pathway to Australian PR.
In the last 2 years, Australia has only granted Visas to high-skilled Overseas Immigrants. However, this year they have signed a new deal called Designated Area Migration Agreement or DAMA. It lowers the skill requirements. The main reason behind it is a severe shortage of laborers in provinces. The main 2 regions being targeted are - the Northern Territory and Warrnambool.
DAMA for the Northern Territory
The Visa program for the Northern Territory applies to occupations in the tourism and hospitality department. There is a dire need for bar supervisors and wait staff in that region. They struggle to retain skilled Overseas Immigrants. Hence, the search has now shifted to low or semi-skilled Immigrants.
The Government has agreed to offer Australian PR to such Immigrants. As quoted by ABC.net.au, they must stay in the territory for more than 3 years.
DAMA for Warrnambool
DAMA for the Warrnambool region offers Australian PR for occupations in the following fields -
Dan Tehan, the MP fears that Overseas Immigrants might want to move to a city after gaining some experience. He wants workers to stay in the region for a longer time. The Government is considering 5-year residency criteria. The DAMA for Warrnambool is yet to be signed. Hence, there’s still confusion around the mandatory criteria.
However, Mr. Tehan wants Overseas Immigrants to stay in the region for 3 -4 years. Then they should apply for the Australian PR.
