The US and Ireland have signed a new deal to diversify US Immigration services at Irish airports. It includes the expansion of pre-clearance services at Dublin and Shannon airports. Also, the agreement promises to offer extended hours of service.

Daniel Mulhall, Ireland’s Ambassador to the US has signed this agreement with Todd Owen. The latter is the US Customs and Border Protection or CBP Executive Assistant Commissioner. The ceremony took place in Washington. The agreement further assured increased staffing and cost recovery.

The Charge d’Affaires of the American Embassy said that it’s an excellent initiative. This should help both the countries manage the increased travel. A forerunner of this deal had commenced back in 1986. It was then updated in 2008. However, discussions to modify the deal further started in 2017.

After 2 long years of effort from various Irish and American agencies, the amended deal was finally signed. The US State Department, Irish Department of Transport and Tourism and many other agencies took part in it.

The initiative is part of CBP’s plan to remove security threats, as quoted by Irish Post. They want to restrict the boarding of high-risk Immigrants. It will eventually help strengthen the US Immigration system. The deal includes reimbursement of the additional pre-clearance services cost at Irish airports. The costs will be borne by Immigrants. Neither the Irish nor the US Government will bear these costs.

Shane Ross, the Minister for Irish Transport, Tourism, and Sport expressed his views on this initiative. The expansion of US Immigration is an imperative asset for the country, he said. The countries have a long and unique relationship. This deal offers both the countries the ease of doing business.

Ireland has been engaging with the US for the last 3 years on the need for this deal. Mr. Ross confirmed the same. Also, the US has been striving to expand the initiative to other countries. They aim at diversifying the US Immigration system by incorporating beneficial services. Canada and the UAE also have the pre-clearance services at their respective airports.
