Indian techies headed the Canada way

Canada

As per The Economistmore IT jobs have been created in the technology sector by Toronto in Canada than by Seattle, New York, Washington DC, and Silicon Valley combined.

With the Trump administration restricting H-1B visas and Green Cards making them more difficult to attain for Indian techies, the U.S. has ceased to be the preferred destination for many Indian techies.

Moreover, with Brexit scheduled for October 31, 2019, even the U.K. poses much confusion and uncertainty for techies hailing from India.

The biggest appeal that Canada holds is in the form of the Global Skills Strategy (GSS) programme

Launched in 2017, GSS aims at attracting highly skilled workers from all over the world to work and settle in Canada.

Indians have been the biggest beneficiaries under GSS.

As per data released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Canada (IRCC), a total of 17,132 work permits were approved under GSS by the end of December 2018. Of these, India got the maximum number of GSS work permits. While India got 9,500, China followed with 1,420 work permits under GSS.

Most of the Indian techies that have got work permits for Canada under the GSS include the following professions –

  • Software engineers
  • Data processing professionals
  • Computer consultants and analysts

Moreover, Canada also plans on the expansion of immigration programs such as – Canada Experience Class (CEC), Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

Industry experts opine that, in all probability, Canada will be the next logical destination for tech firms in the near future. Samsung and Facebook have already set up their Artificial Intelligence (AI) labs in Canada.

Nevertheless, all is not as rosy as it seems. While there are many job opportunities in Toronto, the job prospect is not as promising in the other cities of Canada.

Canada also somehow does not appear to be attracting the right investment and is only perceived as an investment destination of the third tier.
