Indian migrants top Australian citizenship chart for fifth year in row

According to the Preliminary data from the Department of Home Affairs , Indians and British are ahead compared to other nationals in the Australian citizenship.

For the fifth time, Indian migrants have emerged as the largest group of migrants to confer the Australian citizenship. As per the records, out of 138,646 migrants who were awarded with Australian citizenship, 24,706 are of Indian origin and is followed by British with 17,316 migrants.

Highlights:

  • Indian migrants surpass other nationals in becoming Australian citizens for fifth time in a row
  • The number of new Australian citizens drops by 30 percent because of the pandemic
  • Having excellent skills, proficiency in English language, visa-free travel, and interests in government jobs made Indians to achieve these spectacular results
Country Number of Australian citizenships
Philippines 8,659
China 7,302
New Zealand 5,612
Pakistan 5,415
Vietnam 4,613
South Africa 3,838
Iraq 3,792
Afghanistan 3,656

The main reasons why Indians have to surpass the foreign nationals include:

  • Indian pool of skilled workers are proficient in English language and are high in number
  • Showing interest to work in the government sector, which requires citizenship
  • Australian passport allows visa-free travel to many countries
  • The influx of Indian immigrants into Australia is very high compared to other nationals

So, logically, the number will be more in the Australian citizenship queue. Indians are enthusiastic about traveling for their economic growth, settlement in life, and about having a better life overseas.

But the pandemic has impacted a lot in the percentage of people seeking Australian citizenship.

As per the records, a fall is observed in the number of people who are citizens. The number has decreased from 204,817 (2019-20) to 138,646 (2020-21), recording a decline of 32 percent.
