Indian immigrant workers in Qatar have news to rejoice as the Government of Qatar has amended its contentious policy for Exit Visa. This might bring a major relief to the Indian immigrant workers. The amendment will permit immigrant workers to exit Qatar without employer approval.
Qatar will be hosting the Soccer World Cup in 2022. Several numbers of immigrant workers are engaged in the nation in the construction sector. It is in this background that the contentious Exit Visa has been eliminated, as quoted by the Business Today.
Many groups for Labor Rights in Qatar had demanded the scrapping of Exit Visa. The nation has 1.6 million plus overseas workers. Majority of them are from Asia and a significant number of these are from India.
Several cases have been reported wherein overseas workers in Qatar have complained of employer harassment. This is in the form of refusal of Exit Visa in spite of completion of their contracts.
The International Labour Organization has praised this as a crucial initiative. This is towards making Qatar enhanced worker friendly. ILO Doha Office Spokesperson said that ILO welcomes Law No 13 enactment. This will have a positive and direct impact on the immigrant workers’ lives in Qatar, added the Spokesperson.
Notwithstanding the changes in the policy of Exit Visa, overseas workers will need approval from employers for job swapping. Many immigrant workers are subject to exploitation and harassment under this legal provision. The reason is that the approval is rejected by the employer for ridiculous reasons.
Rights and Labor groups have criticized the KAFALA sponsorship system in Qatar. This is widespread in the Gulf States that have a vast population of overseas workers.
