The number of foreigners moving to Germany is only increasing every year. In fact, this country has the highest percentage of foreigners in the world. However, the process of getting a permanent residency can be confusing.

We hope to simplify it for you through this article. We will help you with the complex requirements for permanent residency in this short guide.

The good news is that is you are a European Union (EU) citizen you are qualified for permanent residency since Germany is part of the EU.

You are given a permanent residency permit or a settlement permit that allows you to live in Germany for an indefinite period. You can also work and study in the country like any other citizen.

The criteria for getting a permanent residency are

  • Adequate knowledge of the German language (B1 level)
  • Financial independence,
  • Lack of Criminal record and
  • Health insurance.

You must have lived in Germany for five years either for work or study on a legal residence permit to apply for permanent residency.

You need to pass a health check and have knowledge of German society and culture. Apart from this, you must have contributed to the German pension system for 60 months to qualify for permanent residency.

While this is the general permanent residency process, there are other ways to acquire it such as marriage or specialist qualifications.

Marriage

If you are married or in a civil partnership for more than two years and have lived in Germany for three years then you are eligible to apply. However, the requirements such as no criminal record and sufficient health insurance remain the same.

Specialist qualifications

The waiting period is generally shorter for people of this category. If you have done your graduation from a German university you can apply after two years. However, you need to have a job related to your education and paid the pension for 24 months.

If you are highly qualified and your work involves specific technical knowledge you can apply for residency as soon as you get your work contract.

Children born in Germany to foreign citizens are eligible for permanent residency.

Germany with its thriving economy and ageing population has made it easy for foreigners to live and work in the country. These factors have made Germany a nation with the highest number of foreigners in the world.

According to a report by Reuters Germany has the highest number of immigrants with more than 15% of the country’s population born in other countries.
