German immigration policy changes

The government of Germany has approved many changes to its immigration policies last week to attract more foreign workers.

Changes have been made to the Germany job seeker residence permit, valid for three years. And various bureaucratic procedures were also removed, like creating new facilitations to get an EU Blue Card in Germany.

Changes made in the German Blue Card

Following changes have been made in the immigration policies to obtain the German Blue Card:

  • Lowering the required minimum salary: The minimum required salary will be reduced so that more foreigners can come to the country with the EU Blue Card. The current minimum salary to get a German Blue Card is €56,400.
  • The German language is no longer mandatory: German knowledge is not mandatory anymore to apply for a Blue Card in the country.
  • Professional experience is not mandatory: Applicants can now apply for a German Blue Card even with a degree in that particular sector. Now, professional expertise will be optional to apply for the same.
  • Changing employers and bringing family made easy: The policies have been modified under which Blue Card holders will be allowed to change employers within the country. Also, getting your family to the country will become much easier for people holding such cards.
  • Blue Cards for IT Specialists and People under international protection: Under the new immigration policies, IT specialists can now get a Blue Card without a university degree. And people living in German or other EU countries can apply for the Blue Card and work in a highly skilled sector that needs workers.

Reason for the changes in the immigration policies

Germany is facing a labor shortage after the pandemic, like all other European countries. Recently, the German Ministry of Economy has projected that there will be a labor shortage of some seven million skilled workers in the country by 2035. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures from now.

The German Federal Government has announced that there are 240,000 more jobs to be filled in by 2026 than the available workers.
