Express Entry category based draws in Canada

On 31st May 2023, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced about the categories which will be focused at the time of category-based Express Entry draws this summer.

Both the category based draw and general draw will be held at the same time. In general draws, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invite the candidates with high ranks to apply for Canada permanent residence (PR). The numbers of invitations are limited for the program-specific draws.

It also invites the candidates with high proficiency in French. The numbers of invitations are limited for the program-specific draws and candidates with work experience in following fields:

  • Transport
  • Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
  • Agriculture and Agri-food
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Healthcare

Process of choosing categories

If the candidate is eligible and have experience in the mentioned categories, it is very useful to know the job market which suits better and the availability of the job.

The New categories are selected to fill the vacant job positions throughout the country, as immigration is an only way to overcome the shortage of labour in Canada. These categories were selected after the legislative requirements ensured the minister’s participation in conclusion with territories and provinces, members of unions, injury, employers, worker advocacy groups, workers, immigration practioners and researchers and settlement provider organizations.

Healthcare

Since pandemic, Canada was facing high job availability in the Healthcare and Social Assistance category.

To fill the job vacancies in healthcare system Canada relies immigration. There were 143,695 job vacancies in the Healthcare and Social Assistance category in the fourth quarter of 2022. The number of jobs per provinces is given below:
