The new EU Single Permit Directive will come into force on May 20, 2024. Under the new Single Permit Directive, foreigners will be issued work and residence permits under a simplified procedure. The Social Security and Migration Ministry of Spain said that more favorable rules would apply to workers from other countries.
Foreign workers can now obtain a permit that will act both as a residence and work permit without undergoing prolonged and strict procedures. The new EU Single Permit Directive will introduce simplified procedures for single permits with an unemployment period.
Foreign workers can stay in the country longer, even while looking for a job. Another important change was that third-country nationals could apply for a single permit without leaving an EU member state; they should have a residence permit there.

The new single permit directive will also improve the protection of foreign workers against exploitation. The member states are not allowed to impose strict rules on the rights and working conditions of foreign workers. Moreover, every member state must ensure that foreign workers are treated equally as EU workers.
Once the new directive is effective, the EU member states will have two years to make all the necessary changes to their national laws.
