Construction industry in Ontario urgently needs workers

Ontario happens to be the most popular province in Canada. As the population and the job market in Ontario grows, it also increases the need for commercial and residential infrastructure in the province.

Bill Ferreira, Exec. Director of BuildForce Canada, says that he expects Ontario to experience a high labour demand. The Construction industry will have low unemployment and will be in urgent need of workers. He also anticipates a high number of retirements in the coming years.

To overcome its ageing population and increasing demand for expansion, the Construction industry in Ontario would need 100,000 more workers in the next ten years. There will be a high demand for onsite occupations like Engineers, Electricians and Carpenters. Offsite occupations like Management-related and Administrative occupations would also see a spike in demand.

Currently, 26% of the total workforce of Ontario comprises of newcomers. Most of these workers come from India, China and Europe.

Ontario plans to increase its recruitment efforts to fill in the current labour gaps by bringing in more workers from within and outside Canada. The province aims to welcome 1.4 million newcomers in the next decade.

Ontario is home to major cities like Ottawa, Canada’s capital city and Toronto, a major technology hub. Ontario has been the preferred choice of new immigrants to Canada for many decades now.
