Canada’s Budget 2023 focuses on Healthcare

Canada’s Budget 2023 highlighted new spending for healthcare as the top priority. Early February this year, the government announced that it would spend about $200 billion in the next ten years for healthcare in the country.

Dental Care for Canadians and Newcomers

Canadian Budget 2023 created a national dental plan for Canadians that are uninsured. The budget allocates $13 billion over five years and an ongoing $4.4 billion to implement the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

The new plan will provide dental coverage to uninsured Canadian families with an annual income under $90,000 without co-pays for those whose family income is under $70,000.

The Canadian government provides free healthcare for all the permanent residents in their provinces. It covers everyday medical expenses, emergency medicine, etc.

Other spending in the Healthcare

The budget also allocates $158.4 million to support the implementation and operation of 988 over the next three years. 988 will be a hotline in Canada for suicide prevention and support during a mental health crisis. The system will be set by November 30, 2023.

The budget includes investing $10 million over two years towards ParticipACTION’s Let’s Get Moving Initiative. The initiative will aim at increasing daily physical activity. Also, to renew the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund, the budget allocated $36 million over three years.
