The Canadian Govt. has revealed its 5-year international education strategy. The new strategy calls for global ties, innovation and greater diversity.

The Federal Govt released its strategy this week which acknowledges the strong presence of foreign students in Canada. The strategy also revealed that 570,000 Student Visa holders contributed $21 billion to the economy since January 2019.

The $148 million strategy aims to increase the number of source countries for international students. The strategy has also committed $30 million to diversity the recruitment efforts in this area.

More than 50% of all international students in Canada come from India and China. Most of these students are found in larger cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. The new strategy will target a wider range of countries like:

  • Ukraine
  • Mexico
  • France
  • Colombia
  • Turkey
  • Brazil
  • Morocco
  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia

The new strategy also aims to distribute the international student population in Canada. It will focus on bringing students to those areas which receive fewer immigrants.

Renowned Universities like the University of Toronto and McGill University in Montreal are already popular among international students. Other smaller universities in the country could also be an attractive option for many international students. These universities are:

-University of Lethbridge, Alberta

-Thompson Rivers University, British Columbia

-University of Manitoba etc.

James Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification, says that international students contribute to the economic success of Canada. They help develop cross-cultural skills and innovation. The foreign students who go back to their countries become life-long ambassadors of Canadian values and Canada, as quoted by CIC News.

The new strategy will also commit $100 million on Canadians studying abroad. The strategy will focus primarily on groups like low-income, indigenous, and people with disabilities.

Ahmed Hussen, Immigration Minister, says that international students are often the most ideal candidates for Permanent Residence. The strategy will capitalize on elements which makes Canada the preferred destination among international students. Canada has a wide variety of study programs in both English and French. Canada also has diverse communities who are friendly and welcoming. Not to forget, the country has an enviable quality of life, many opportunities for your career and PR.
