Australia introduces new Parent Visa for Overseas Immigrants

The Federal Government of Australia has announced the launch of a new Parent Visa. The Visa will be effective in the first half of 2019. It is going to be a temporary sponsored Visa.

Overseas Immigrants in Australia have been demanding for this Visa for years. The country wants to facilitate family reunification. Immigration minister David Coleman confirmed the same.

The Parent Visa will offer parents and grandparents a chance to meet their families. Mr. Coleman believes that this will benefit the Australian community as well. The Labor party, however, opposed the decision. They had initially supported this new Parent Visa before it was passed. Mr. Coleman has expressed his surprise on their behavior. He asked for an explanation from the party leader.

As reported by SBS.com.au, it’s the high cost of the Parent Visa that disappointed the Labor party. According to them, the Government has made many changes to the Visa. They were not proposed earlier. They said that the Parent Visa has many limitations. It is not entirely meant to help the Overseas Immigrants, they insist.

The Parent Visa limits itself to only one set of parents per household. It was not proposed before the election. Overseas Immigrants will be made to choose which parents or in-laws they want to bring to the country. It was not expected.

Overseas Immigrants had run a campaign demanding for the Parent Visa. The Government then promised them a temporary sponsored Visa. Let’s have a look at what was promised.

• Parents and grandparents will be able to stay in the country for up to 5 years
• Overseas Immigrants must pay $5000 for a 3-year Parent Visa
• They would have to pay $10000 for a 5-year Visa

Overseas Immigrants had questioned the high fee for the Visa. Immigration experts across the world suggested them to not go for it.

The launched Parent Visa

The new Parent Visa passed by the Government incorporates many changes. Let’s check out the mandatory conditions for this Visa -

• Overseas Immigrants must act as financial guarantors
• They must pay any debt incurred by their parents in case of a medical emergency

Mr. Coleman supports the changes. He insists the changes were required for the Government. There should be a strict rule for taxpayers. The Government must recover all public health debts, he added.

Overseas Immigrants do not agree with his view. They feel the Visitor Visa is a much easier and cheaper option. It allows parents to enter the country to stay for up to 2 years.

The launched Parent Visa offers a 2-step application process. This might seem cumbersome to Overseas Immigrants. However, Mr. Coleman said it was necessary to protect vulnerable family members.
