3 India-origin students in TIME’s 25 Most Powerful Teens: 2018

3 India-origin students are among the named in the Time magazine’s 25 Most Powerful Teens of 2018. This is for making a difference across diverse fields. They are Indo-Americans Rishab Jain, Kavya Kopaparapu and Amika Geroge, British-Indian.

The 3 India-origin students are among the groups who have become motivation for youth across the world. This is due to their stunning accomplishments through their passion and work.

An eighth-grade student Rishabh has devised an algorithm that can probably be a cure for pancreatic cancer. A freshman at the Harvard University Kavya Koparapu has developed a deep-learning computer system. This can scan tissue slides of brain cancer patients looking for differences in cellular alignment, color texture, and density. These are specific to a particular individual’s case, as quoted by the Times of India.

Kavya devised the system after learning about the rate of survival of glioblastoma. This is an aggressive cancer of the brain and its survival rate remains same in the last 3 decades. Her aim is to develop therapies that are targeted and also individual specific.

The aim of Amika George is to persuade lawmakers to eliminate what she calls as ‘period poverty’. This is something that really disturbs me said Amika. Many girls in the UK have been regularly missing school during their periods. This is because they are unable to purchase menstrual products, added Amika.

Amika launched the # Free Periods campaign in this regard. This gathered around 200,000 signatures for her campaign to eliminate period poverty. The movement ultimately acquired backing of over 12 UK lawmakers. This galvanized the UK Government to allocate funds for this issue for the first time.
