2 Indian teachers are among the 50 nominees across the globe for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize worth 1 million USD. This was announced by the Varkey Foundation in London.
One of the 2 teachers is Arti Qanungo. She is an English instructor at Delhi’s Shakarpur Government Girls Higher Secondary School. The second Indian teacher is Swaroop Rawal. He is a Life Skills teacher at Gujarat’s Primary School Lavad. The 2 teachers will contend with 48 other teachers for the prominent award. The winner will be announced in March 2019 at the Global Skills and Education Forum in Dubai.
Qanungo said that the Global Teacher Prize acknowledges the endeavor and efforts of teachers. It offers global voice and appreciation to the issues that have been raised by me, she added. Arti has been recognized for her efforts to protect children and especially girls from deprived conditions are sheltered from neglect and abuse.
Rawal said that good teachers can assist children in becoming fine human beings. They can foster imagination, curiosity, wonder, and love, he added. We, teachers, can inspire young ones to become more caring, loving, and emphatic by sharing our lives. Perhaps, we can make them more responsible people, said Rawal, as quoted by the Times Now News.
The Indian teachers were shortlisted by the UK-based Varkey Foundation from 10,000 plus nominations and applications. These were received from 179 plus nations across the world. Global Teacher Prize was set up by the foundations 5 years ago. This was to recognize the outstanding teacher who has made a great contribution to the profession.
