10 Month Visas will immensely help businesses in Jersey

Eliot Lincoln has said that 10 month visas will be of great help to the business in Jersey British Isles. He is the President of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce. These Visas are for overseas workers outside the EU. They will thus be able to be employed in seasonal jobs, said Lincoln.

Lincoln’s statement comes even as a new plan has been revealed by the JEP. The formal announcement in this regard is likely to be made by the government in some weeks.

The 10 Month Visas are aimed to resolve the scarcity of workers in diverse sectors. These include Retail, Hospitality, and Agriculture. These are witnessing acute scarcity of seasonal workers. This is partially owing to EU workers choosing to remain in the Euro Zone. It is due to the decreasing value of the UK Pound, as quoted by the Jersey Evening Post.

JCC President Lincoln said that the 10 Month Visas are the need of the hour. We have been working with the Minister of Economic Development on this, he added. Some of the industries are actually struggling, added Lincoln.

The agriculture sector is really suffering in 2018 owing to Brexit. The EU workers have effectively been taking pay cuts owing to the exchange rates. Anything that can be done to support these struggling sectors will be welcomed.

Recruitment has been made tougher by record employment and low unemployment said Lincoln. This is one among the top priorities of JCC, he added. The Hospitality sector is struggling for Chefs. It is an industry that pays well but not as well as the financial services, said Lincoln.

Senator Lyndon Farnham the Economic Development Minister said that he plans to present his proposals within weeks. This will permit the scheme to be functional from 2019 summer, he added.
