Eligibility for Canadian citizenship

A few Eligibility criteria for Canadian citizenship are listed below:

  • Should be a permanent resident of Canada.
  • Requirements of Canada's physical presence must be met.
  • File all your taxes (only if necessary).
  • If you fall between 18 and 54, you must pass Canadian citizenship.
  • Language skills must be proved if you are between 18 and 54.

Reasons that make you ineligible for Canadian citizenship

As per IRCC, you may not be eligible for Canadian citizenship:

  • If you are on parole or serving a term of imprisonment in Canada.
  • If you are serving a sentence outside Canada.
  • Engaged in an appeal for a crime under the Citizenship Act.
  • Being under investigation for a crime or having been convicted of a war.
  • If your citizenship application has been rejected for misrepresenting information in the past five years.
  • Canadian citizenship has been revoked because of fraud in the past 10 years.
  • If you have been found guilty of a criminal offence in Canada under the Citizenship Act, and IRCC has received your application for citizenship after June 11, 2015, while the conviction took place four years before you applied.
  • You were caught for a crime outside Canada 4 years before you applied for Canada’s citizenship, equivalent to an indictable offence in Canada.
  • If you were convicted of spying offences or terrorism as a member of an armed force of a country involved in armed conflict with Canada.
