Highlights of Canada’s immigration system

  • The main aim of Canada’s immigration system is to reunite families to build a new life in a new country.
  • The biggest category is family sponsorships of new permanent residents to Canada.
  • Individuals can sponsor their parents, children, grandparents, spouses, and other family members to come to Canada.

Sponsorship Programs

Eligibility requirements vary depending on which program you are applying for:

Spousal Sponsorship

If you are willing to sponsor your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, you can sponsor through Spousal Sponsorship. Immigrants who want to be sponsored should legally marry the sponsor or live with the sponsor for at least 12 months in a marriage relationship and qualify as a common-law partner.

Individuals who want to sponsor should provide financial support to the sponsored person for three years and must not expect anything from that person. There are two kinds of sponsorship that are in-land and outland sponsorship; both serve the same purpose. The only difference is where the applicant is residing.

Dependent child Sponsorship

You can sponsor your child via dependent child sponsorship. This sponsorship applies to both biological children and adopted children. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old and in Canada to be eligible for this sponsorship. The sponsoring person should be willing to support the dependent child for 10 years or until the child turns 25. Also, the child who will be sponsored should be under 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship. If the child is above 22, they must be studying, disabled, or dependent on the sponsor.

It is always best to apply for sponsorship before the child’s age becomes 22 so that you can avoid any disqualification with respect to age.

Parents' and Grandparents' Sponsorship

Parents and Grandparents sponsorship is one of Canada’s most popular immigration pathways. The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is an annual program that opens only once a year and allows Canadian citizens to sponsor their parents or grandparents for PR in Canada. This program is a lottery-based system where sponsors should fill out and submit an interest to sponsor form.

Individuals who have submitted the interest to sponsor form will be invited to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents in the next year to become permanent residents of Canada. The person willing to sponsor should commit to providing food, medical, housing, and any other relevant expenses for the person they are sponsoring.
