What are the terminologies used for H-1B visa?

People who want to work in the U.S. in specialty or skilled occupations can apply for an H-1B visa. The visa holders can legally stay and work in the country for six years. After completing six years, they can apply for a U.S. Permanent Residency—Green Card if they meet the requirements.

Terminologies used in H-1B Visa

People who are applying for an H-1B visa must familiarize themselves with the following terms:

H-1B Visa 240 Day Policy

An H-1B visa holder can work up to 240 days with an employer while they are applying for renewal of the H-1B visa status or if they change their employer and are awaiting the new H-1B visa status.

H-1B Visa Number

The H-1B visa number is an 8-digit number printed in red in the corner of the visa. It starts with a letter followed by seven numbers. This number acts as an identification number for the visa holder.

 H-1B Visa Status

The visa status states your immigration status in the U.S. It shows what visa you are from and how long the visa is valid for. The visa holders can check their visa status from the official U.S. portal.

H-1B Visa Stamping Status

Stamping Status is the last step in the visa process. A stamp imprinted on the visa allows the applicants to migrate to the U.S. The status of the stamping can be checked online through the official portal.

H-1B Resident Alien

H-1B Resident Alien is a non-U.S. citizen living in the U.S. with an H-1B visa. The resident aliens must meet the requirements either for a Green Card or a Substantial Presence Test for a calendar year.

H-4 Visa

The H-4 visa is a dependents visa. Through this visa, the H-1B visa applicant can migrate to the U.S. along with their family members—spouse and children (who are below the age of 21 and are not married). A U.S. H-4 visa holder is permitted to work and study in the USA.

H-1B Visa Lottery

To work in the U.S. as a skilled worker, applicants must apply through an H-1B visa pathway. Every year, the U.S. collects the applications and selects the qualified applicants randomly. This is known as the H-1B Visa Lottery. Each year, the intake of bachelor’s students is 65,000, while the intake of master’s students is 20,000.
