What are the benefits of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

Parents and Grandparents Program is an immigration program that permits Canadian permanent residents and citizens to sponsor parents and grandparents to come to Canada. Eligible applicants applying via this program are granted permanent residency and can apply for Canadian citizenship.

What are the benefits of PGP? 

The benefits granted to applicants under the Canada PGP are as follows:

 

  • Can apply for Canadian citizenship after some time
  • Are eligible to access social privileges and healthcare benefits as the sponsor is either a citizen or permanent resident in the country
  • Can take up work in the country
  • The rights of parents and grandparents applying via this program are protected by the Canadian government

What are the eligibility requirements for PGP?

The following are the eligibility requirements that must be met to be considered for the Parents and Grandparents Program.

 

  • Sponsor should be above 18 years old and must be a Canadian permanent resident or a citizen 
  • The sponsor is the child or a grandchild of the candidate being sponsored 
  • The Sponsor must meet the MNI (Meet the Minimum Necessary Income) required for the family 
  • The sponsor must be financially stable and should ensure they can provide the basic needs for their family for the next 20 years
  • The sponsor must be related to the parents and grandparents by blood or adoption.
  • The stepmother, stepfather, or step-grandparent of the sponsor is eligible if they meet certain conditions

 

What is the minimum income requirement of a sponsor?

The sponsors applying for the Canada PGP program must showcase the income requirement for the past three years before the date of application. The table below lists the income requirements based on family size.
