The US is now more dependent on overseas talents: SHRM

Most of the Human Resources Managers in the US believe that overseas talents play a positive role in driving economic growth and innovation in the US. More numbers of US companies are now attracting overseas talents from other nations. This has been revealed by the State of the Workplace 2019 Report by the Society for Human Resource Management.

The authors of the report elaborate that overseas talents are now a critical part of the local workforce. This is especially as the US workforce is aging and is witnessing record levels of unemployment.

Overseas talents possess the accurate right cross-cultural competencies required for a job role. This is the view of the majority of the HR Managers who participated in the immigration survey of the SHRM. These workers also have a positive impact on the financial growth and business productivity of their organizations.

Most of them were also of the view that overseas workers play a positive role in driving the growth of the economy and innovation in the nation. More than 52% of the respondents said that their companies sponsored a job-based US Visa for a minimum of 1 worker in the last 5 years.

The most popular US Visas for overseas talents are:

  • The H-1B Visa for specialty occupations with 87%
  • L-1 Visa for Intra-company expert knowledge with 35%
  • F-1 Visa or OPT for academic program students with 34%
  • J-1 Visa for exchange visitors with 29%
  • E-1 Visa for Treaty Investors and Traders

Meanwhile, organizations in the US have also reported facing challenges while hiring overseas talents that include:

  • Lengthy processing times for Visas – 66%
  • The volatility of the Visa process – 55%
  • Complex paperwork for Visa application – 60%
  • Lack of adequate Visas for catering to their demands – 33%

The authors of the SHRM report conclude that the data points out to one major fact, as quoted by the Benefits PRO. It is that businesses in the US need an efficient, predictable, and modern system for employment-based immigration.
