You have 50 minutes time limit for the SAT writing section. In this time, you have to examine the prompt an author puts out in a passage in the optional SAT Essay section. Until you see it on test day, the content of the given passage remains a mystery, but you have an opportunity to learn about SAT Essay prompts as you prepare for the test. For a stellar essay, learning the elements of SAT writing prompts will help you lay the groundwork.

Structure of the prompt

All of the optional prompts for the SAT Essay conform to the same general framework. First the prompt leads you to understand how proof (examples or facts) is used by authors to support their arguments. Secondly, you are asked to consider the prompts and how authors connect their arguments with facts. Third, to improve their ideas, you must consider the use of elements by the writers, such as their word choice.

Go over the practice essay prompts to get an idea of what you will expect in the actual test.

Plan and practice

The best way to plan is to practice writing essays with sample SAT writing prompts. As you read the prompts, get into the habit of jotting down notes as well. These notes will assist you in including evidence that supports your interpretation of the statement of the author.

Before writing your practice essay, making an outline is another useful way to plan for this assignment. There are four sections to the standard outline: an introductory paragraph that contains your thesis term, a paragraph that provides concrete examples that support your thesis, a third paragraph that provides specifics of how your thesis is supported by these examples, and a concluding paragraph that restates your thesis.

You are responsible not only for writing a top-notch essay, but also for reading, learning, and evaluating another piece of work in the current SAT essay. While you develop your essay, the planning you have already done for the SAT's reading and writing sections will come in handy. When reviewing the essay prompt, you will use your reading comprehension skills and you will use your normal written convention skills when writing your essay.
