Data from the Center for American Entrepreneurship revealed that 43 percent of the companies figuring in the 2017 list of Fortune 500 were founded by immigrants or their children.

The proportion of immigration founders in technology is slightly higher at 45 percent, despite the fact that immigrant entrepreneurs are found in every sector.

The research demonstrates how much immigration meant to the US as trendsetting companies such as DuPont, PepsiCo and Colgate were founded by immigrants from Europe who arrived more than a hundred years ago.

Apple founder, Steve Jobs, a Syrian immigrant’s son, and Google’s Sergey Brin, a Russian immigrant are one of the notable immigrant entrepreneurs of the recent past.

There are other companies having immigrant roots such as Marc Randolph, one of the founders of Netflix, who is an Austrian immigrant’s son. On the other hand, Sol Barer, an immigrant from Germany, is a co-founder of biotech firm Celgene.

Quartz asks if the Trump administration goes ahead with its policies on immigration, will a century later America still benefit from the ideas of people born outside the United States.
