Confused between GRE and GMAT: Know more

Many students who wish to pursue higher education abroad are often confused about whether they want to pursue management or a core discipline. For the ones who wish to pursue an MBA abroad choosing between GRE and GMAT can be often confusing.

GMAT

The full form of GMAT is the Graduate Management Admission Test. It is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

GRE

The full form of GRE is the Graduate Record Examination. It is administered by Education Testing Services (ETS).

The format of the two exams

Both the exams test the verbal, writing, and quantitative aptitude of a candidate. Though the questions are different, there is an overlap in the skills tested. Many purists believe that GRE tests a candidate memory whereas GMAT tests the logical ability.

Scoring in the two exams

The scoring in GMAT is on a scale of 200 to 800. A score of 700 roughly falls in the 90th percentile.

In GRE, the scoring is between 260 and 340. A score of 327 roughly falls in the 90th percentile.

Both GRE and GMAT have an analytical writing evaluation section. Candidates, on the basis of their essay response, get a separate score on a scale of 6. It, however, does not contribute to the total score of either GMAT or GRE.

GMAT also has another Integrated Reasoning section where a candidate is scored on a scale of 8. However, this too is not added to the total score.

How B-Schools interpret the scores

GMAT has been consistent in its format for many years, however, GRE has undergone frequent changes. Thus, more schools have been using the GMAT in comparison to the GRE over the years.

A score of 310 out of 340 may sound like a good score in GRE. However, it falls in the 49th percentile and hence is a weak score.

On the other hand, a score of 720 out of 900 on GMAT falls in the 94th percentile.

Verdict

Both GRE and GMAT are accepted by reputed business schools across the globe. Thus, there is no such “correct” test. However, 90% of all admissions to foreign MBA courses happen through GMAT, as per The Hindu.

If you are undecided on whether you want to pursue management or a core discipline, then go for GRE. It will serve a dual purpose.

However, if you are sure about pursuing Management, then the right choice would be GMAT.
