Introduction:

Welcome to the University of Zurich (UZH), which was the first university that was set up by a democratic government in Europe. 

Established in 1833, it is the largest Swiss university.

UZH is one of the most esteemed research educational institutions in Europe. It is reputed particularly in the disciplines of biology, economics, genetics, immunology, and neurosciences, among others.

At the undergraduate level, even though the courses have Swiss Standard German as the medium of instruction, all postgraduate courses are taught in English as well. It has two main intakes for international students, one in September and the other in February.

All three of its campuses¸ in the city center, Oerlikon, and Irchelpark, are located close to Zurich’s city center and can be easily accessed by public transport.

Departments and Programs:

Houses more than 23,250 students, of whom more than 5,000 are foreign nationals. 

Its seven faculties, with over 150 departments and institutes, offer over 200 study programs at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate levels.

It has many libraries, which store more than 5 million volumes. 

Unique Features:

UZH also houses twelve museums, which, together with the libraries, are accessible to the general public. It is closely associated with other Swiss universities and many others all over Europe. 

Known for its liberal and progressive policies, it was the first German-speaking university in the world to grant a doctorate to a female student.

Student Life:

The Academic Sports Association of the university (ASVZ) offers diverse sports facilities to its students. The Verband der Studierenden der Universität Zürich VSUZH represents the student body through which it conducts events and manages the university administration.

Admission Process:

The UZH offers several bachelor’s degrees and programs for study. Students can only complete one program full-time or combine two programs, with one being a major and the other a minor, subject to the faculty and discipline within a particular degree program. 

To apply to a bachelor’s degree program, you must submit a complete application dossier, which takes up to three months to verify that you fulfill its requirements. 

After being admitted, you can commence only the bachelor’s program you chose, provided you meet the relevant language and other requirements.

The University of Zurich offers various master’s degrees and programs for study. You take up only one full-time study program or two study programs, with one full-time and one minor study program, based on the faculty and discipline, within a particular degree program, To apply to the UZH’s master’s study programs, you need to meet the official admission and the appropriate requirements for academic admission.

The official requirements for master’s programs are as follows. 

  • An undergraduate degree of a minimum of three years 
  • Academic transcripts
  • A valid passport 
  • A CV or resume  
  • The GRE test score
  • Statement of purpose (SOP)
  • A letter of recommendation (LOR) 

You need to submit a complete application dossier, which takes up to three months to verify that its requirements are all fulfilled. 

After gaining admission, you can commence the master’s program only after you meet the relevant language and other requirements.
