France is becoming a popular country for students who want to study a Master’s degree abroad. One main reason is that public universities in France have low tuition fees compared to countries like the USA, UK, and Australia. Students can get good quality education at a lower cost, especially in fields like engineering, data science, business, fashion, and arts. That is why many international students choose France.

Students who want to study a Master’s in France should check the admission requirements carefully, as they can be different for each university and course. Top universities in France are known for courses in engineering, technology, business, and design. They also offer good job opportunities after completing the course.

  • Tuition fees at French public universities for Indian (non-EU) students are €3,941 per year (about ₹3.9 lakhs) from September 2026. This is much lower than studying in the UK or the USA.
  • Université PSL, the highest-ranked university in France, is #28 in the QS World University Rankings 2026.

Steps to Apply for Master's in France

Campus France India Process: Mandatory for All Indian Students

Every Indian student planning to study in France must complete the Campus France (Études en France/EEF) process before applying for a French student visa. The process includes online registration, paying a ₹18,500 fee, document verification, and an academic interview. It usually takes 3–6 weeks.

Campus France is the official French government organisation for international student admissions. You cannot apply for a French student visa without a Campus France attestation, so start this process as early as possible.

Step-by-step Campus France (EEF) process

Step 1: Create an EEF account on the Campus France India portal and verify your email address.

Step 2: Fill in your profile with your education details from Class 10 onwards and upload the required documents.

Step 3: Pay the Campus France fee of ₹18,500. The fee is non-refundable but is waived for Charpak scholarship holders and some exchange students.

Step 4: Submit your application for document verification. This usually takes 1–2 weeks.

Step 5: Book and attend your academic interview at the nearest Campus France office. During the interview, the advisor checks your study plan, chosen course, financial readiness, and reasons for studying in France. The advisor then sends their recommendation to the French Consulate.

Step 6: Receive your Campus France attestation (usually within one week) and then apply for your student visa through VFS Global.

Documents required for the EEF application

  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates
  • Bachelor's degree mark sheets and certificate or bonafide certificate for final-year students

Masters in France Without IELTS or GRE

Studying in France without IELTS

Campus France does not require IELTS. Each university decides its own English language requirements.

Many French universities accept:

  • MOI (Medium of Instruction) certificate: A letter from your Indian university confirming that your Bachelor's degree was taught in English. Most universities issue this certificate within a few days at little or no cost. Public universities such as Paris-Saclay and Sorbonne accept MOI for many English-taught programs.
  • English-medium transcripts or an admission interview conducted in English.
  • Other English tests such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, or Cambridge English, if MOI is not accepted.
  • For French-taught programs, students usually need DELF or DALF (B2 level) instead of an English language test.

Important:

The visa officer may still assess your English during the Campus France interview. Top business schools such as HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, INSEAD, and Sciences Po usually require IELTS or TOEFL. Always check with the university before deciding not to take IELTS.

Studying in France without GRE

Most public universities in France do not require GRE for Master's programs. GRE is mainly needed for some top engineering schools and research-based courses. GMAT is usually required for MBA and some Master's in Management or Finance programs at leading business schools.

Bottom line:

An MOI certificate can help you avoid the IELTS exam and save around ₹18,000, but always confirm with the university first. Top business schools generally still require IELTS or TOEFL, along with GMAT.

IELTS Requirements for Masters in France by University Tier

The IELTS score needed for a Master's in France usually ranges from 6.0 to 7.0. Many public universities accept an MOI certificate, while top business schools usually require IELTS or TOEFL.

The French government also supports international students by offering work options after studies, making France a good choice for building a career. After completing your Master’s in France, you can apply for the APS (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) permit. This allows you to stay for 12 months to search for a job without needing a company sponsor. Once you get a job, you can change it to a work permit. After working and living in France for 5 years, you can apply for Permanent Residency. Students can also work part-time while studying. You can work up to 964 hours per year (around 20 hours per week) without needing a separate work permit.
