The US will lose 4 million jobs by 2030 if it continues with the anti-immigration policy under Trump said the report of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. The Professor of Economics at Wharton School Kent Smetters said that immigrants are taking up jobs that nobody else is willing to take up in the US. In the case wherein immigrants are disallowed to the US, these jobs will remain vacant, added Smetters.
On the other hand, the Professor of Economics at Wharton School also explained that Legal Immigration must be encouraged while illegal immigration must be curbed. The reason is that when it comes to productivity, documented workers outperform undocumented workers, as quoted by the Money CNN.
The team at Wharton School lead by Smetters has predicted that in case there are no policy changes to existing US Immigration regime, there will be 160 million workers in the nation by 2030. But even if Trump goes ahead with deporting 10% of the illegal immigrants annually, there will be only 156 million workers by 2030. This is based on the maximum possible deportation of undocumented workers by Trump while he occupies the US President’s office.
Smetters elaborated that Trump’s immigration policy would spell negative impact for the US economy. Economists have already pointed out that immigration is a crucial factor for the increased rate of employment.
Macroeconomic Advisers’ Managing Director and Economist Joel Prakken said Trump’s anti-immigration policy will have a devastating effect on the US economy. He has contended that the immigration policies of Trump will diminish the US labor force. It will also decrease growth and fail to create a visa regime that would cater to the requirements of skilled workers by the US firms.
