UK Work Visa salary cap for immigrants to be reviewed

A review into proposed UK Work Visa salary cap of £30,000 for immigrants has been ordered by the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid. This is the threshold for migrants to qualify for this Visa after the UK quits the EU.

 

The Migration Advisory Committee has been asked by Javid to review the proposals. This is after criticism that the proposed figure for an immigrant to be considered as a skilled worker was very high.

 

The Home Office has said that Javid has asked MAC to consider if there is any case for diverse salary caps for diverse areas. He has also asked if any exceptions should be made, added the HO.

 

The aim is to avert the scarcity of skilled workers in specific regions or sectors in the UK. This includes Junior Doctors, Chefs, Lab Technicians, and Paramedics who fall below the cap of £30,000.

 

The UK Home Secretary said that he wanted the figures to be revised by pointing to the lower median salaries existing in Scotland. This nation is heavily dependent on immigrant workers in comparison with the rest of the UK.

 

Javid has already dumped the target of 100,000 net annual immigration set when Mrs. May was the Home Secretary. He has now offered adequate hints that he intends to see that the proposals in the Immigration White Paper are ripped too.

 

The Immigration White Paper outlines how the next UK Prime Minister will handle immigration after exiting from the EU.

 

It was recommended by MAC that the UK maintains the current minimum salary caps for the future immigration system. This includes the salary of minimum £30,000 for experienced workers and £20,800 for fresh workers including new graduates. This is in order to qualify for a 5-year UK Work Visa.

 

However, Javid has asked the MAC to review the proposed salary cap figures for UK Work Visa. He has said that it is crucial for the new UK immigration system to keep attracting the best talents. This is for the growth of our economy and supporting businesses while managing our borders, he said.

 

The UK Home Secretary said that the proposals are the biggest transformation to the UK immigration system in one generation. So, it is appropriate that all the evidence are considered prior to finalizing them, added Javid. It is important that the new system works in the best interest of the entire UK, he explained.

 

The draft plans were announced on 2018 December and a 12-month engagement program with employers and businesses commenced. However, the Cabinet of Mrs. May has divided on the issue already, as quoted by the Politics Home.
