Going abroad to study at universities and applying for a post-study work visa after graduating is becoming a norm for students. Since last six to seven years, top advanced economies worldwide have become open to students to staying back and working. As international students in foreign universities can now easily apply for post-study work visas, more of them are opting to apply to foreign universities.
Though overseas study applications are the highest for the US, Australia and Canada do not lag behind much, as they too offer opportunities to migrate based on the education levels of the students. Students can work part-time while pursuing postgraduate studies or even full-time, based on their qualifications.
Countries that allow students to work post-study are the US, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand, among others.
The US is the most sought-after study destination among international students.
With H1B Visas, students are allowed to work for three years, after which they can get an extension of up to six years.
Australia is also a highly popular destination as it also is home to quite a few best universities in the world. Students can obtain a two-year work permit, regardless of the field they specialize in, after they complete their master's degrees.
Owing to this country's prosperous economy, attractive job opportunities are available, making Australia a sought-after destination for students intending to work after completing their studies.
The requirements are the following to get a post-study work visa:
Foreign students must have studied for two years in Australia in undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral programs. Diploma holders are not eligible for these visas.
Canada is next only to the US as the most popular study overseas destination among Indian students due to its immigrant-friendly policies. Along with world-class education, Canada's flourishing economy has begun attracting more international students.
Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) in Canada are given to foreign students who have passed out of accredited Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs).
Canada offers PGWP to foreign students only if the students are aged above 18, and have pursued a full-time course for a minimum of eight months in Canadian DLIs.
Officially received transcripts or certificate of completion from respective DLIs - stating completion of the course pursued.
PGWP applicants should be aware that PGWP will not last for more than three years, whatever the circumstances may be. Generally, the PGWP's duration is equal to that of the courses or programs that the students are pursuing.
The UK continues to be one of the most desired study destinations for foreign students. The European country, however, has strict post-study work visa rules, making it less appealing to foreign students. Students who have graduated in the UK can apply for a Graduate visa which allows them to stay in Britain for two more years.
Germany, which is also one of the most desired destinations for study, houses some of the premier universities in the world and a robust economy. Graduates can apply for post-study work visas, which will allow them to stay for up to 18 months. During this time, they can hunt for a job in their field of specialization. After students get a job, they can apply for German employment visas (Residence permits).
New Zealand also is known for offering post-study work visas, besides its quality higher education. These visas are given to students who have accomplished a minimum Level 4 of the education qualification framework.
Students must have completed at least 60 weeks of education in New Zealand. They should have completed two different course types lasting at least 30 weeks.
