Work permit options in Canadian video game industry

With the number if Coronavirus cases decreasing in Canada, many industries are seeing a revival. Among them are video game production and film and TV production. These industries have resumed their activities while maintaining social distancing norms.

Montreal has become a hub for film and TV production especially for Hollywood production houses who are at present unable to travel to Europe or other countries for their work. With Canada being the closest country, its cities offer a better alternative to shoot content for streaming services whose production has picked up in the past year.

This boom in TV and film production will create job opportunities for talented people in this field. Canadian employers wishing to hire such people are required to get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). If the job offer is in Quebec, they will be required to obtain a Certificatd’acceptation du Québec (CAQ). This document will allow them to work on a temporary basis in Quebec. They will have to produce both this letter and the LMIA to apply for a work permit.

Global talent stream

This initiative was designed to assist Canadian businesses in locating foreign talent and addressing a lack of local tech talent. Companies will easily fill their talent requirements under this scheme. The time it takes to process a visa has been shortened from six months to just two weeks. If it requires an LMIA it will take another two weeks.

Under this scheme, applications for work permits and visas will be processed in just four weeks.

Category A

This group involves high-growth businesses that can show a need for skilled expertise. These businesses must clarify why they need to employ specialized talent from other countries. To enroll in the GTS program, they must be validated by a designated referral partner.

Category B

This group covers companies that want to recruit highly qualified foreign employees for positions on the Global Talent Occupations List. These roles must be extremely in demand. They must have a lack of local talent for these skills.

Employers in this field can recruit foreign talent through either of these categories.
