500,000+ Canada jobs were vacant in the first quarter of 2019

500,000 plus Canada jobs were vacant in the first quarter of 2019 with increases reported in 6 provinces. It also includes the territory of Nunavut. The number of job vacancies increased again in Q1-2019 in comparison with the same period in 2018.

The number of Canada jobs that were unfilled in Q1-2019 reached 506,000. It was an addition of 44,000 in comparison with the same period in 2018. This marked the 10th successive quarter to record a year-on-year increase. It is both in the rate of job vacancy and the number of job vacancies.

Nearly 80% of the Canada job openings were permanent positions according to Statistics Canada. A permanent job is one that is anticipated to last as long as the employee needs it.

Labour shortages are being faced by employers across Canada. This is due to the aging population in the nation and the increasing numbers of Canadians who are retiring.

The Federal Government has planned a key strategy in response to this challenge. It has decided to increase the levels of immigration to Canada over the next 3 years. Most of the immigrants are likely to arrive through economic immigration programs.

The highest year-on-year increase in Canada jobs for Q1-2019 was recorded by the Quebec province. There was an increase of 23% or 21400 jobs in the province, as quoted by the CIC News.

Nearly 50% of this increase was spread across 3 sectors according to Statistics Canada. These were Manufacturing, Accommodation and Food Services, and Health Care and Social Assistance.

Two regions in Quebec were placed 3rd in Canada in terms of job vacancies increase in comparison with Q1-2018. These were Laurentides and La Mauricie.

The 2nd highest year-on-year increase was recorded by Ontario with 12,400 jobs. The greatest increases were recorded in the following sectors:

• Accommodation and Food Services Sectors
• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services
• Retail Trade
• Health Care and Social Assistance

A year-on-year increase of 9,300 vacant jobs was recorded by British Columbia. This was led by the growth in:

• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services
• Transportation and Warehousing

The highest rate of job vacancy in Q1-2019 was recorded by British Columbia with 4.4%. This was the highest among the territories and provinces in Canada according to Statistics Canada. It thus was the only Canadian province with the rate of job vacancy above the national average of 3.1%.
