Visa restrictions encouraging illegal immigration globally: Research

Visa restrictions are encouraging illegal immigration globally and are actually ineffective and counterproductive. It is diverting individuals who intend to remain lawful towards illegal pathways. This has been revealed by the latest research in the UK.

The study for the effect of Visa restrictions was held by the academics from 3 London Universities. These are the Royal Holloway University of London, University of Birmingham, and University College London.       

The researchers observed that enhanced Visa restrictions on immigrants’ results in the enhanced need for enforcement. The governments must take into consideration the larger impact of curbs. They must consider the aspirations of the people to stem unlawful migration, said the researchers.

University of London’s Dr. Cassilde Schwartz said that it is tremendously tough to gauge illegal immigration. It is often unobservable and clandestine, said the co-author of the study.

We have found that less than 20% of the aspiring immigrants are willing to consider unlawful pathways said, Dr. Schwartz. This is with the aid of experimental techniques for the survey, she added. Obviously, there are fewer options when there are Visa restrictions, added the Researcher.

The research paper has been published in the National Academy of Sciences Proceedings. It analyzes the reason and manner in which people immigrate based on diverse levels of restriction. The focus of the researchers was 4 streams controlled by the system of Visa immigration. These are High skilled immigrants, Students, Families, and Low skilled immigrants, as quoted by the Guardian.

The findings of the research indicate that the Visa restrictions had little impact on controlling numbers. This was for the categories of Students and High skilled immigrants.

On the other hand, restrictions imposed on low skilled and family class immigrants had a contradictory impact. It only served to divert a huge number of aspiring applicants towards unlawful routes.
