US Citizenship and Immigration Services [USCIS] has announced that US service members and veterans will now be able to file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, online. The announcement in this regard was made through a News Release by USCIS dated May 4, 2020.

With the online filing, an alien can submit forms electronically, along with being able to check the status of their application online as well as receiving notices from USCIS. Innovation and technology are being utilized by USCIS to cater to the requirements of employees, petitioners and applicants.

USCIS is committed to ensuring a secure and efficient process for all, regardless of the electronic or paper format of a petition or application submitted with them.

Those that are either currently serving or have served in the armed forces in the past might be eligible for applying for naturalization under special provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act [INA].

Under the special provisions of the NIA, the naturalization application fees is waived both for military members as well as veterans. Certain other requirements are also waived as well.

Till now, a paper Form N-400 had to be filed by the US service members and veterans. Certain immigration benefits under the provisions of the NIA also include the family member of a service member.

Additionally, previously submitted biometrics might be used by USCIS to meet biometrics requirements.

In case US service members are stationed outside the US, they might submit two fully completed FD-258 fingerprint cards along with two passport-sized photographs taken by the US Embassy/Consulate, the Department of Homeland Security, or the military police.
