Only two Indian companies feature in the top list of applicants for employer Green Cards in the US. The two companies are Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.
As per data released by the US Dept. of Labour, tech companies like Cognizant, Facebook, Amazon, Cisco and Google together have filed more Green Card applications. The calendar year followed by the Dept. of Labour runs from October to September.
Among the top 10 companies, Amazon has filed more than 1,500 Green Card applications which are the highest among all tech companies.
Cognizant comes second with 1,300 applications. Cognizant is an IT services firm with its headquarters in the US. It has a large employee base in India.
Cisco has filed 1,058 employer Green Card applications which put it on the third spot. TCS follows on the 4th spot with 1,009 Green Card applications.
Indian company Infosys is placed 7th on the list with 519 Green Card applications.

However, it is not yet clear as to how many of these applications will convert to Permanent Residence.
As per NASSCOM, there is a shortage of skilled professionals in the US. Hence, companies in the US are hiring from where they can find most-India.
The validity of the H1B Visa is 3 years. This can be extended for another 3 years. The H1B Visa can be extended further for people who have been approved for a Green Card. Hence, most people apply for a Green Card at the end of their H1B Visa validity.
Sponsoring companies in the US have to bear the expenses of the H1B Visa. However, it is not so for the Green Card, as quoted by the Economic Times. However, to retain high-skilled or highly valued resources, companies often apply for an I-140 which is the Immigrant Petition for Alien Workers.
At present, it may take up to 8 years for an Indian to gain Permanent Residence in the US. The Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act could benefit more than 300,000 Indians in the US.
