UK’s effort on increasing minimum wage

  • The UK Government is considering to hike the minimum annual wages for foreign workers to more than £33,000. 
  • The plans that are presently being discussed are expected to be executed in this week.
  • In order to get jobs in the UK, workers outside of shortage occupations must earn a minimum income of £26,200, which is significantly less than the median wage of £33,000. 
  • The net migration data this week for the year ending in June 2023 is expected to reveal levels that are roughly 500,000, which is still an amount higher than pre-Brexit levels.

Salary raise for skilled workers in UK

  • Prominent government leaders, such as Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick, have been leading the charge for migration changes. Jenrick recently raised concerns about the promises of limiting migration, and called for an immediate action in order to establish a migration system that meets public expectations.
  • It is expected that the ministers would agree to raise the pay for skilled workers to about the median wage of £33,000.
  • The salary that is proposed if executed it may have an impact on private enterprises, with care workers currently being the topic of discussion as they are classified as a shortage occupation.
  • According to Oxford University Migration Observatory, the threshold has not been increased in line with inflation and, the rising income if modified would be estimated roughly £30,000.
