Toronto has been ranked among the top 3 cities for tech workers in the US and Canada. The Scoring Tech Talent Report of CBRE ranked 50 cities in the US and Canada on 13 parameters. Job growth, completed tech degrees, tech supply etc. were the metrics that these cities were ranked on.

San Francisco Bay Area came in the top spot followed by Seattle in second.

Toronto was ranked in the third spot ahead of New York City, Washington DC and Austin, Texas.

Toronto was also ranked as the number 1 city in terms of “Brain gain”. Since 2013, Toronto has added  80,100 tech jobs. Toronto’s tech talent pool grew the fastest among the 50 cities at an impressive 54% increase.

The CBRE report also stated that Toronto has created the same number of jobs as the San Francisco Bay Area in the last 5 years.

Other Canadian cities featured in the list are Vancouver at 12th spot, Montreal at 13th and Ottawa at the 19th rank.

The rapid growth in the tech sector in Canada has increased the need for more access to international tech workers. To address the labour shortage in the tech sector, the Federal Govt. and many provinces have stepped up their immigration programs.

The Express Entry program has been the largest source of skilled overseas workers and IT professionals in Canada.

The top 3 occupations of the most invited candidates in the Express Entry 2018 were:

  • Software Engineers & Designers
  • Information System Analysts & Consultants
  • Computer Programmers & Interactive Media Developers

It is to be noted that candidates in the Express Entry Program are invited based on their scores and not the occupation.

For tech workers whose CRS scores are lesser than the current EE cut-off, getting a provincial nomination could open the doors to Canadian PR. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score.

Several PNPs have tech-focussed streams or draw, the most recent one being Ontario. In its very first tech draw, Ontario invited 1623 Express Entry candidates in 6 tech occupations. You do not need a job offer from Ontario to be eligible for the tech draws.

The Manitoba PNP has several tech occupations in its In-Demand Occupation List.

Saskatchewan has recently added Computer Programmers & Interactive Media Developers to its list of in-demand occupations.

British Columbia PNPs tech pilot also conducts regular invitation rounds for tech workers.

High-skilled foreign workers and tech companies can also take advantage of the Global Talent Stream.

The GTS allows companies in Canada to access temporary foreign workers nominating eligible occupations. The processing time under the GTS is just 2 weeks, as per CIC News.

Since it was founded in 2014, more than 24,000 temporary overseas workers have been hired through the GTS.
