Permanent immigration in Switzerland increased in 2023 

According to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), the number of permanent foreign residents who immigrated to Switzerland increased by 181,553 in 2023. Out of this, 130,483 individuals came from EU or EFTA countries, while 51,070 were third-country nationals.

 

Additionally, the net immigration in the foreign permanent resident population rose by 17,506 to 98,851 people in 2023.

Over 2.3 million foreign nationals are living permanently in Switzerland

As of 2023, Switzerland is home to over 2.3 million foreign nationals living permanently in the country. Among these foreign nationals, EU/EFTA nationals make up the largest group, followed by third-country citizens. The details about the countries and the total number of foreign nationals living in Switzerland are provided below:

Permanent employment and family reunification in Switzerland

A total of 130,483 EU/EFTA citizens immigrated to Switzerland last year. Out of those, over 70% (92,318) came for permanent employment, and 75,346 came for seasonal jobs. Both categories saw an increase of 16.3% and 13.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year.

 

Family reunification comprised of 26.5% (46,281 people) of long term immigration to Switzerland, with 15% of them being the family members of Swiss citizens. This accounted for a total of 7.6% increase in the family reunification cases compared to 2022.

 

Regarding restricted residence permits for third-country nationals, 75% (3,016) of short-stay permits and 80% (3,616) of residence permits were utilized in 2023.
