Switzerland has decided to relax certain preventive measures that had been introduced for the containment of COVID-19. This includes some border restrictions to be eased as well. A slowdown in the infection has prompted this step from the Swiss authorities.

As part of the restrictions being eased, the Federal Council has announced that the backlog of applications filed by non-Swiss individuals for working or rejoining the family in Switzerland will also be processed beginning May 11.

As of now, the border controls will continue to be in place. The second phase of easing of border restrictions might be possible from June 8.

Workers from third countries that already have a Switzerland work permit but have been unable to get a visa due to the entry ban, will also be allowed to enter Switzerland.

Similarly, applications submitted prior to March 19 will be processed for the employment of nationals from third-country.

Cross-border work permits are to be processed, provided they are based on a written contract that had been finalized before March 25.

While the frontier checks will not be lifted as such, border posts might be opened for avoiding a long waiting time.

Foreigners coming from abroad will be allowed to enter Switzerland at Geneva, Basel, and Zurich airports.

Recently, Switzerland has decided to reopen 5 crossing points with France – Monniaz, Veigy, Mategnin, Soral II, and Landecy. While these crossing points between Geneva and France are to be reopened by the Swiss government, the opening of the crossing points would be limited to weekdays.

The European Union has developed a strategy for the resumption of cross-border operations. The EU is planning to provide the same strategy for easing of COVID-19 restrictions to all its Member States.

According to the EU, guidelines for the resumption of cross-border operations will be set out by mid-May.
