The European Union has come up with a strategy for restarting cross-border operation. This is an attempt to work out a harmonized approach for restoring air travel and other operations between EU Member States.
The EU plans on providing all the Member States with a similar strategy for the lifting of restrictions. These restrictions refer to the special measures imposed in view of the containment of COVID-19.
As per the EU, the guidelines in this regard will be set out by the middle of May. The EU has clarified that even if the exit strategy is adopted by all Member States, the timing for the adoption of the exit strategy by each of the member states will depend on their individual situations.
The overall health situation in the individual Member State will be assessed. It will also be seen as to how the situation develops in the upcoming weeks.
Speaking to the media last week, EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean has stated “Probably by mid-May we can put forward the strategy we’re working on”.
As per Valean, the guidelines on restoring travel and tourism in the current season include different measures. These include proper disinfection, social distancing, and wearing of protective equipment. Rules within airports as well as on-board aircraft are also included.
The importance of effective coordination between the EU Member States has been highlighted. Valean has said that “It’s better to have a harmonized approach than see each one taking its own measures”.
The EU Commission has already developed a joint ‘roadmap’ for the lifting of containment measures in response to the requirement for an exit strategy.
The EU and its Member States have been looking forward to ways for lifting the existing measures for COVID-19 containment and restoring tourism.
