The Swiss Government has opposed curbs on Overseas Immigration from the EU states. A referendum might take place to reinforce this movement. EU wants its people to move and work freely in Switzerland. In return, its states would allow Swiss access to their market.
Swiss People’s party or SVP has opposed this decision. They want Overseas Immigration to end. They feel the country lacks tools to manage its growing population. Overseas Immigration would only make the situation worse.
As reported by euronews.com, a referendum must be held as there are varying views on this matter. A 7-member cabinet has been formed to urge voters to reject the proposal. Switzerland is in need of talented Overseas Immigrants. Curbing Overseas Immigration would affect the state in many ways. Also, it might raise the cost incurred in EU imports.
Simonetta Sommaruga, the Justice Minister said curbing Overseas Immigration would affect the bilateral path between Switzerland and EU. SVP has urged for a referendum soon. 2 years back they had asked for a quota on Overseas Immigration. But it was not considered.
Ms Sommaruga added that Overseas Immigration from EU has already reduced a lot. It is not a good sign for Switzerland. The country has to compete with other EU states for Overseas Workers. Reports suggest that in 2017, about 34000 EU Immigrants migrated to Switzerland. This is a huge drop from 66000 EU Immigrants in 2013. This year it has dropped further by 10000.
Albert Roesti, the SVP President opposed her opinion on the numbers. He said back in 2000 when the free movement law was passed, the numbers were fewer. According to him, the numbers were forecast to be even fewer. He added that it’s a false statement by the Swiss Cabinet.
Mr. Roesti confirmed that in 2018 tens of thousands Overseas Immigrants have come to Switzerland. He further added the situation will worsen when EU economy weakens. There will be immense pressure on Switzerland. The country doesn’t possess such tools to deal with that. Since 2002, over 700,000 EU Immigrants have come to Switzerland. A quarter of Swiss residents are having a foreign passport. This would eventually hit the Swiss economy, he concluded.
