Sizable Canada businesses around 47% have reported a shortage of skilled workers. This is as per the monthly report of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The revelation of the CFIB is in its Business Barometer survey for October 2018. It is an approximately 10% increase from the results of the survey in January 2018. This is also a 20% increase from the results for January 2016.

The CFIB has been a leading proponent of the role of immigration in resolving labor shortage in Canada. This is especially true for roles that need highly skilled workers.

CFIB said that the shortage of skilled workers is forcing sizable Canada businesses to restrict their recruitment plans. It is straining their growth ability as well, added CFIB.

The Canadian provinces with the highest scarcity of workers were revealed by the report of the CFIB. These are Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, as quoted by the CIC News. The industries with a shortage of workers have also been identified by CFIB. These are Personal Services, Construction, Transportation and Natural Resources.

The CFIB survey collated responses from 655 members of the federation. These were chosen at random for its Business Barometer survey held every month.

Quebec has taken several initiatives of late to address the scarcity of workers in the province. This is especially true for regions out of the metropolitan area in Montreal.

The changes include implementing a new EOI system - Expression of Interest for the Quebec Skilled Worker Program. The Government has said that this will help in selecting skilled workers. These are those who can fill the shortages of workers in the regions of the province.

Ontario also altered the requirement of threshold score for its stream Human Capital Priorities.
